Shoulder CARs
7 mins
Explore the available range of the shoulder through a controlled articular rotation, or CAR. Coordinate movement of the arm with the shoulder blade as you move through shoulder flexion, overhead range and extension, allowing the scapula to travel through protraction, elevation, retraction and depression. Internal and external rotation of the humerus are also incorporated as the arm travels through the circular pathway. Work slowly and intentionally while attempting to isolate movement at the shoulder as much as possible. Limit compensations such as rotating the chest or arching through the spine, and prioritize the range you can actively control rather than simply creating the largest possible circle. There are many ways to perform shoulder CARs. This variation combines movement of the humerus, scapula and rotational components into a comprehensive exploration of shoulder mobility and is Rāma's preferred approach.
